Movie Clip

This video could be used to introduce a lesson or unit about ecosystems and bio-diversity.  I love Bill Nye videos they are fun to watch and keep the students attention.  I believe these types of movies and video clips can mentally prepare students for the lesson at hand. The movie triggers their brains and the student begin to think about the material in their own way.

Using technology in the classroom to help teach!

Technology should be used in the classroom in various ways.  In my classroom I want to incorporate technology into my class by using powperpoint, itunes, smartboards and projectors.  All these tools I can use are essential for a positive learning environment.  As a teacher I need to know about current technology and need to keep up with the new advancements.  Eventually, I would like to learn more about ipads and other touch screen devices.  In my classroom learning with technology will be a vital aspect of my class.  This class has increased my knowledge of technology and has prepared me to become a better teacher.  I know now how to create teacher web pages, curriculum pages, scavenger hunts, and webquests.  All of these features will aid me as a teacher in the future.

Podcasting

  • A podcast is a series of digital media files that are released episodically and often downloaded through the internet.
  • Podcasting could be used in the classroom to help students understand certain material better and could be an aid in homework or projects.  Students could learn how to use podcast to find information and help them with school.  Podcasting could also help the teacher preview material or books for his/her class.
  • The pros of podcasting is that the process is usually quick and easy.  Download and play. A negative of this though is that their usually isn't a visual aid for student to look at during a podcast.  Some students may get distracted and lose their focus.

Ethics

Ethics are what you believe in.. What you think is morally right and morally wrong and if you believe in an all superior being God these are all aspects of ethics.. As a teacher you must try to be a neutral party in the school building.  Some parents may be against your beliefs or religious views and as a teacher it is best to just not let those things slip out.  Instead I would suggest to display your ethics through your actions.  For example, if I am a christian I believe my co-workers will be able to characterize me as a christian by the way I act such as being polite, showing kindness to facility/parents and the way I present myself.  By displaying your faith this way it cannot harm you in the classroom as a teacher.  A pro about ethics in school can display the role models of the school.  The teachers that truly strive for success and display some ethical beliefs by their actions are perfect role models for their students.  A con of ethics would be if your religious views skipped out in some way and a dispute occurred between you and some parents.  This could ruin your career and cause a major fault in your teaching.

Virtual Tours

A virtual tour is a simulation of an existing location, usually composed of a sequence of video images. They also may use other multimedia elements such as sound effects, music, narration, and text. The phrase "virtual tour" is often used to describe a variety of video and photographic-based media.

I could use this type of multimedia in the classroom when trying to help my students visualize a certain place.  For example if I was teaching about different ecosystems I could use a virtual tour to show my students real and diversified ecosystems from around the world

Teacher Web Pages

A teacher web page is a website that is usually created by a teacher that provider his/her students with information about class, school and other resources.  They can also provide a blog for other teachers to communicate with each other.

Teacher web pages can be used in the class to help your student with certain subjects.  You could keep powerpoints online for students to view and download.  They also could provide review games for during and after class that students could use.

The pros about teacher web pages would be that they can provide help to students and can be a great resource.  They also can keep teachers in contact with students' parents and other fellow teachers.

The cons about teacher web pages would be that they can be a hassle to keep up with if you forget about updating.  Some times the site can become out of date and not as helpful as they should be.

Chapter 6 Reflection

Your Learning Style Preferences

You are a...

29% Visual Learner

41% Auditory Learner

29% Kinesthetic Learner

I believe I am more a visual learner than an auditory learner.  I like seeing concepts and visualizing situations.  I think when I can see something rather than just hear about it, that I can comprehend it better.  Test like these are fun and can help students figure out what type of learning style they prefer.

Web Quests!!

A web quest is an inquiry-oriented lesson format in which most or all the information that learners work with comes from the web. These can be created using various programs, including a simple word processing document that includes links to websites. The focus of a web quest would be that the students grasp concepts through the use of the Internet. Students have met the objective when they have gathered information and are able to show what they have learned.  The strongest educational reason to use a web quest is to provide students with specific information in an interactive structured format.  Another advantage to web quests would be that they can provide less experienced students the structure needed to learn.  The greatest drawbacks of web quests are the lack of student thinking and lack of options.

CONS

I think supplying computers to students would be a disadvantage.  Some students do not have the maturity and responsibility to take care and use these machines.  Many students would abuse the computers and neglect them.  Secondly, I think that this would cost the school and government too much money.  I think this would be a waste of money and the money could go somewhere else to better the learning of these students.

Online Conference

After watching my online conference video, I learned how students are using more mobile devices and electronics in the classroom.  "Project Based Learning in Hand" shows its viewers through the movie that students as early as elementary school are using more technology; fifth graders were using hand held devices to use apps to do homework and to collaborate with fellow classmates.  This video also shows how teachers can use this new technology more efficiently in the classroom for projects and lessons.  I really enjoyed this video and hope to start using this new information soon so that I can be accustomed to it before I begin teaching as a teacher.

How to Integrate Tech into class.

I would integrate technology into my classroom by using power-points and smart-boards.  I would use computer labs to help my students understand how to use computers and how to learn how to type better.  I could also introduce some new websites that we have learned through this class to my students to better their education.

Technology In Education

Experience:  I've had a computer through out my entire life and have been using them for a while.  In high school I expanded my knowledge through the class iLife.  In this class we worked with many apple programs and created music and movies.  I have continued to use technology through classes and other projects to advance my knowledge.
Expectation:  I expect to become more familiar with  new programs and to become more familiar with the ones I know how to use.
Pros:  Being able to use technology keeps you up to date and modern through out the world.  I believe that having a good background in technology will better my self for careers to come.
Cons:  Sometimes only using technology tends to be a disadvantage because we neglect our other means of communication and information such as newspaper and magazines.  Technology also can be misleading and incorrect due to the fact the everyone who is anyone can post and share information.
